Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said that the Swedish Air Force would keep a number of Gripen C / D operational beyond its planned retirement schedule. If part of the Gripen C / D should be retired in 2026, the latest policy stipulates that Gripen C / D will still be operational until at least 2030.
The plan was announced by the Swedish Defense Ministry in mid-October and confirmed by the Saab manufacturer on 23 October.
Based on the agreement with the manufacturer, the Swedish Air Force will get a total of 60 Gripen E / D units, where the delivery schedule will take place in the period 2022 to 2026. Meanwhile, for now, the Swedish Air Force still operates around 73 Gripen C / D units distributed into six air squadron.
