Militarymedia.net | The MH-60R Seahawk is a multi-mission helicopter, operated by the U.S. Navy. It is also referred to as Romeo. MH-60R Seahawk It is a further development of the SH-60B Seahawk, which in turn is based on the UH-60 Black Hawk of the U.S. Army. Development of the MH-60R Seahawk began in 1993. The MH-60R Seahawk is designed to combine features from the SH-60B and SH-60F anti-submarine warfare helicopters. The first low-level initial production helicopter was re-produced from the SH-60B. But the next helicopter was newly built. The MH-60R Seahawk was first deployed in 2009. It is currently used by the US Navy (more than 100 units) and the Australian Navy.

The main missions of the MH-60R Seahawk are Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW). The MH-60R Seahawk helicopter can detect and track submarines and surface ships and attack with torpedoes and missiles.

Secondary missions are search and rescue, combat search and rescue, vertical charging, medical evacuation and insertion and extraction of special forces.

The MH-60R Seahawk is operated by 4 crew members in an anti-submarine warfare role and crew 5 in an anti-surface warfare role. It can also accommodate additional passengers.

The MH-60R Seahawk has an advanced mission system and sensors. It carries advanced air active sonar, multi-mode search radar and a nose-mounted front-view infrared tower (FLIR). Its multi-mode search radar has automatic periscope detection and discrimination capabilities. It also carries sonobuoy that is launched from the air. But the suite of magnetic anomaly detectors has been removed. Data is transferred via advanced air fleet data links.

The MH-60R Seahawk has improved its offensive capabilities compared to the SH-60B or SH-60F. The MH-60R Seahawk has a pilot wing and can carry two Mk.46, Mk.50 or Mk.54 light torpedoes, two AGM-119B Penguin anti-ship missiles or four AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles. A 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun mounted on a single door can be mounted.

The MH-60R Seahawk has two General Electric T700-GE-401C turboshaft engines, each producing 1,900 shp. This is the same engine of the SH-60B.

The MH-60R Seahawk has a hinged tail, which can be folded to reduce traces on board. The instrumentation and cockpit view are similar to the MH-60S.

The MH-60R, as well as all other U.S. Navy H-60 series helicopters, have rescue companionships for search and rescue missions. For vertical filling tasks can be equipped with cargo hooks with a capacity of 2.7 tons.

For a longer range, the helicopter can carry an external fuel tank. The MH-60R Seahawk has an integrated self-defense system.
