Militarymedia.net | The Mil Mi-35MS is a special military command, control and communications helicopter for VIP flights. It was developed for the Russian military command. The Mi-35MS is a modified version of the Mi-35M fighter (Western reporting name Hind-E). The first operational Mi-35MS was seen in 2013. In 2014 it was reported that three Mi-35MS flying command posts would be built. However, this helicopter only received media attention in 2015-2016.

There are already Mi-8MTV helicopters configured for the VIP role in Russia. Russian presidents regularly fly with one. Top Russian Defense Ministry officials use similar helicopters on the ground. Some of these VIP helicopters have enhanced command and control capabilities. But the new Mi-35MS is much faster. The Mi-8MTV has a maximum speed of 230-250 km/h, while the Mi-35MS helicopter has a maximum speed of 335 km/h. The new helicopter can be seen as a flying limousine for Russian military VIPs.

The Mi-35MS is equipped with two Klimov VK-2500 engines, each producing 2,466 shp. It uses the main rotor system of the Mi-28 fighter. The rotor blades are made of a composite material with titanium components. The helicopter has also received improved avionics and digital equipment, including a night vision system.

The Mi-35MS flying command post carries no weapons. It retains the stub wing, on which missiles and rocket pods are usually hung. Instead the wing is reported to carry additional fuel tanks for greater range. However this may also be a pod with various electronic equipment, not a fuel tank. The Mi-35MS carries a missile approach warning sensor. This VIP helicopter reportedly carries a self-protection system against anti-aircraft missiles with infrared guidance. The chin mounted gun was replaced with a radar fairing.

The cockpit and vital components of this helicopter are significantly armored.

This VIP helicopter is packed with sensors, such as radar, night flight system GLONASS/GPS navigation system, satellite communication station, anti-jamming special communication equipment. There are several antennas above the tail boom.

The Mi-35MS is operated by the pilot and co-pilot. This helicopter has a luxurious interior and can only accommodate about 4-5 passengers due to its small size. The passenger compartment has new rectangular shaped windows.

Unlike its predecessor, the Mi-24, this helicopter has a non-retractable landing gear. This feature allows to reduce weight. Also in case of a crash or hard landing, the landing gear absorbs some of the energy.

The Mi-35MS helicopter is painted in an unusual solid green color and has no military insignia, except for the Russian flag. The helicopter was seen landing at the Moscow Kremlin, which serves as the official residence of the Russian president, as well as landing at the Russian Ministry of Defense and other government headquarters.
