Militarymedia.net | The CH-54 Tarhe, also called Skycrane or flying insect, is manufactured by Sikorsky. The nickname Skycrane comes from its heavy-duty cargo lifting mission. As for the insect—it was the nickname given by the pilot due to its unusual design. During the Vietnam War, this versatile helicopter was used for a variety of missions, including recovery, rescue, infantry transport, medical supplies, and even armored transport operations.
The CH-54 helicopter is equipped with a crane in the center of the fuselage operated by the co-pilot or technician from the rear of the pilot's cabin. The crane operator has a good view of what is going on below. Tarhe demonstrated his best in combat, climbing at a maximum speed of 100 km/h even when overloaded. During the Vietnam War, the CH-54 Tarhe was one of the US Army's safest helicopters to fly. Compared to the AH-1 Cobra and UH-1 Iroquois the losses of the CH-54 helicopter are minimal. In 1992 Erickson Air-Crane purchased the production rights for the Sikorsky S-64, the civilian version of the CH-54. This helicopter is still in production.
