Militarymedia.net | The Ka-65 is a new Russian naval helicopter currently being developed by the Russian Helicopters company. This helicopter was designed as a replacement for the Kamov Ka-27 family of naval helicopters which is showing its age. The first prototype images appeared in 2019. Currently the Russian Navy operates about 90 Ka-27 series helicopters of all variants. Also a number of these naval helicopters are used by various other countries including Algeria, China, India, North Korea, Vietnam. So there may be some export potential for the new Ka-65.

The new cross-ship helicopters will be installed on various types of warships. It will be used for utility, search and rescue, assault transport, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance and other roles.

Like its predecessor the Ka-65 has a coaxial rotor configuration. It uses two rotors that rotate in opposite directions. This feature made it possible to eliminate the tail rotor and reduce the helicopter footprint on board. Currently only Russia produces helicopters with such a coaxial rotor configuration.

The new helicopter will have improved performance over the current Ka-27. The helicopter is planned to be powered by the Klimov TV7-117VK. This machine is still being developed. This engine will develop 2,800 shp and have a peak power of 3,750 shp.

This helicopter will be operated by a crew of 2.

The Ka-65 is equipped to carry a variety of weapons, including torpedoes, anti-ship missiles or guided anti-submarine bombs.
