There is a high degree of similarity between the various trucks in this family. This family development was funded by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The BAZ-6402 is designed to tow semi-trailers on all types of roadways. It can also operate in rough terrain and in remote areas. This is a specially designed military vehicle. It was adopted by the Russian armed forces.
This tractor truck can tow a semi-trailer loaded with fuel tanks, air defense radars, air defense missiles and other special equipment with a maximum weight of 15,000 kg. The BAZ-6402 is used as prime mover for towing a special semi-trailer with the Russian S-400 air defense missile.
The cab with front control accommodates the driver and two passengers. It seems that the cabin could be equipped with additional armor.
The BAZ-6402 is powered by a YaMZ-8424.10 turbocharged diesel engine, producing 470 hp. The engine is located behind the cab. This makes it possible to reduce the height of the vehicle and prevent the engine and cooling system from damage and mud clogging. The vehicle has a 6x6 configuration with all wheel drive. It is equipped with a central tire inflation system. The prime mover can be transported by transport aircraft An-22, An-124 or Il-76.
There is also a BAZ-6403 transporter tank with an 8x8 configuration. It was developed as a personal endeavor to meet the possible needs of the Russian Army. It can tow semi trailers with tanks, artillery systems and other military payloads with a maximum weight of 52,000 kg. However this vehicle does not accept production orders. Some sources report that BAZ is developing a more capable tractor truck with a 10x10 configuration.
