The NDA was founded in January 1964 to replace the British-run Royal Military Forces Training College (RMFTC), which had been renamed the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) on independence.

This military university has trained officer corps of Nigerian Army, Air Force, Navy. Although it was founded in 1964, it was not until 1985 that it began to provide undergraduate programs to officers in training. Currently, NDA now offers M.Sc. and PhD programs.

Initially, the NDA trainers were mostly officers in the Indian Army. The NDA expanded to all Nigerian training staff only in 1978. In 1981, the NDA itself began training bilateral foreign militaries. The university was founded in 2018 making it one of the most recently established universities in Nigeria.
