WASHINGTON - US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he was considering imposing sanctions related to Turkey's purchase of Russia's S-400 air defense missile system. However, Mnuchin said that until now no decision had been made regarding this matter.
"We see that, I will not comment on specific decisions, but we are considering them," Mnuchin told reporters outside the White House when asked whether the Ministry of Finance considered such sanctions,
Ankara and Washington have been at odds over purchasing a Turkish S-400 system, which the US says is incompatible with NATO defenses and poses a threat to F-35 fighter jets made by Lockheed Martin.
Washington had previously warned Turkey that it would face sanctions for buying and removing the country from the f-35 program, but Ankara has so far rejected the warning.
The dispute over the air defense missile system is one of the few issues that has strained relations between the US and Turkey. Another issue is about the situation in Syria.
